OpenAI Locked Custom GPT Creation Behind Work Accounts

OpenAI did not stage a keynote. It updated a help page. As of mid-August, personal ChatGPT accounts across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro can no longer create or publish new custom GPTs. Business, Enterprise, and Education workspaces keep the privilege when their admins allow it.

Existing GPTs still open and can still be edited if plan and permission rules say so. Duplication of a GPT now requires eligibility to create new ones. Publishing to the GPT Store is off the personal path. The Creating and editing GPTs article states the split in plain language; OpenAI has not published a longer rationale.

From hobbyist storefront to badge access

Custom GPTs were the consumer-facing promise that ordinary subscribers could own a configured agent without an API budget. Freelancers, tutors, and solo operators built client workflows on Plus. Community threads filled with the obvious complaint: a paid personal plan lost a feature that now sits behind an org badge. The company has spent the year courting workplace seats. This change reads like product policy catching up to that pitch.

The timing matters for the trust fight labs keep having in public. Days earlier, Dario Amodei argued that people already suspect tech is cooking up a new way to screw them, and that only real delivery can answer that suspicion. Pulling authorship for individuals while preserving it for workplaces is a delivery of a different kind. It teaches users where power lives in ChatGPT's product map: inside the workspace, not the household account. Meta's consumer GPU drop at least kept the local builder story open; OpenAI just closed a soft door.

OpenAI can call this streamlining, safety, or enterprise hygiene. The effect is simpler. The people who paid as individuals lost the right to start something new. Trust does not wait for a cancer breakthrough when the help center already moved the keys. For the longer argument on Amodei's clock for trust, see the cure-cancer deferral.
